Spanish -ar verbs in the present tense
One pattern for hablar, trabajar, estudiar and hundreds more.
I can use -ar verbs in the present.
Most Spanish verbs end in -ar. Drop the -ar and add an ending that shows who's doing it.
Stem + ending
hablthe stem-ofor yo
- Hablo español.
- I speak Spanish.
The endings
| Person | Ending | hablar (speak) | trabajar (work) |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | hablo | trabajo |
| tú | -as | hablas | trabajas |
| él, ella, usted | -a | habla | trabaja |
| nosotros | -amos | hablamos | trabajamos |
| ellos, ellas | -an | hablan | trabajan |
Same pattern, many verbs
More everyday -ar verbs: estudiar (study), escuchar (listen), tomar (take, drink), llamar (call), cocinar (cook).
They all follow the same pattern.
One tense, two meanings
The Spanish present also covers "I'm doing": Trabajo means both "I work" and "I'm working".
Examples with English meanings
- Hablo inglés y español.
- I speak English and Spanish.
- ¿Trabajas hoy?
- Are you working today?
- Lucía cocina muy bien.
- Lucía cooks really well.
- Estudiamos español.
- We study Spanish.
Common mistakes
